Friday the 2nd of July sees the start of the Seaton Festival of Cycling 2010. The weekend’s festivities kick off with a torchlight parade on Friday night to welcome The Great Tour riders. Wave off The Great Tour at 10:30am on Saturday morning on the Esplanade as they begin their extraordinary charity circumnavigation of the British mainland. Among the riders will be TV doctor Tristan Gemmill and our very own Alistair 'Madal' Cope. You can also ride with The Great Tour as they leave Seaton, more details here.
On Saturday afternoon Axe Valley Pedallers host “Racing for all” starting at 3pm with the children’s Wacky Races, a fun event for the under 16s. At 4pm it’s Team Wacky Races, a chance for everyone to join in and test their bicycle skills. All are welcome just bring a road worthy bike and a helmet. Places are limited so please register at the AVP stand in plenty of time to secure your place. At 5:15pm the Esplanade and Marine Place roundabout will be closed to create a unique sea front race course as Seaton hosts its first ever 4th Category British Cycling circuit race. From 12pm to 2pm there will be cycle training for adults and children. Bring your own bike and cycle helmet. Throughout the day there will also be children’s activities at Windsor Gardens.
After the day’s excitement, why not bring your own barbeque and join everyone down on the beach for a community barbeque and music. The day finishes with a big bang just after 9:30 pm when there will be a firework display. The public are kindly asked to keep clear of the beach directly under the West Walk area until the display has finished.
Sunday sees the return of the popular Big Top Mania funny bikes, come and have ago on the wacky collection of unicycles, bicycles, tricycles and scooters. We also have a bicycle treasure hunt around Seaton, head to the AVP stand from 10:30am to 1pm to get your clue sheet. Self lead rides in and around the beautiful Axe Valley are also on offer, route cards are available from the AVP stand. Our very own Gee will be providing trails riding demonstrations again this year and we have the hughly popular BMX jam going off at the skate park.
This is just a small selection of the activities and entertainment on during the weekend. Please check the website www.SeatonFestivalOfCycling.org.uk or pick up a programme from the shops. Oh... and don’t forget your bike!
