Christmas 2009 Fancy Dress Ride
The Axe Valley Pedallers celebrate their fifth year of pedalling in traditional festive fancy dress.

This years’ Christmas fancy dress ride took 41 Pedallers, costumes flowing and horns blowing, along the sea front and estuary to The Harbour at Axmouth for a festive welcome of mince pies and mulled wine.  With great hilarity and friendly waves from passersby, the costumed club then cycled off to the warmth and Christmas cheer of The White Hart at Colyford, where a delicious Christmas dinner was provided.

With great anticipation and merriment, the annual AVP awards were announced:

The Peter Vernon Award for ‘the champagne moment’, a beautiful wood carving of a cyclist, generously donated to the club by Peter, went to Len Styles. At the age of 72, Len rode an amazing 240 miles in 24 hours during the club’s ‘round the block round the clock’ charity ride.

The Epic Award went to Sebastian Cope for cycling to work for a month, raising £1,100 for Devon Air Ambulance.

The Most Improved Pedaller was awarded to Monica Yates for completion of her first 100 miles during this year’s Force ride.

And finally, the Mechanical Breakdown Award went to Neil Tubbs who, after blowing a tyre apart, waited at Hound Tor on Dartmoor to have a new one delivered, and then managed to catch up with the rest of the group who were many miles ahead!

This year sees the completion of AVP’s fifth fantastic year. Inspired by joining a Sustrans trail-blazing ride from Kew Gardens to The Eden Project in 2004, Alistair Cope founded the club with the aim of encouraging ‘Cycling for all!’

As well as regular club nights, home and away rides, trips to Ireland, Wales, France and now Morocco, spring 2010 will also see the launch of an organised series of rides for beginners wanting to both improve their cycling skills and also enjoy the fun of being a member of a very sociable club.

2010 looks set to be an exciting and busy time for the Axe Valley Pedallers. Make sure that you are registered on this site and signed up for the newsletter.
