No, you don't need an fancy bike or have to wear lycra to ride with us. Follow the link to find answers to common questions about the club.
- Do I need a fancy bike to ride with AVP? The simple answer is no... but, as with any bike, it should be road worthy. The important thing is to get out and ride and to enjoy yourself. If you start riding on a regular basis and feel that you'd like to upgrade to something better we can help you choose a suitable bike for your style of riding.
- Do I need to wear lycra? Certainly not. Again, it's about getting out on your bike and enjoying the ride, not about trying to look the part. We have one regular member who choses to ride in work boots and jeans and it certainly doesn't slow him down. Many of us do wear cycle specific clothing because it's been designed for riding so it's more comfortable than normal clothes. Don't let the lycra put you off!
- Do I need to wear the "AVP uniform"? Now you're getting the idea... No, we're very keen to make sure there are no barriers to put off new people from joining us for a ride. Ride in what you feel comfortable wearing. We wear club jerseys for two very simple reasons; we like to have a visible presence in our community and also because we're all very proud of our club and don't mind letting people know.
- How long are your rides? There is no set distance for a particular ride and in fact we often have several rides running in parallel so that we can cater for everyone that turns up. If you're only happy to do a few miles we'll group you with other riders of similar ability but if you are comfortable covering greater distances you will ride in a more capable group.
- Will I get left behind? Never; we will always wait for every single rider in our group. We use a back marker system so that a senior rider is designated to ride at the back of the group and make sure no one gets lost off the back. This system also allows faster riders to stretch their legs safe in the knowledge that no one is going to be left behind.
- Do you cater for keener cyclists? Yes; we have a regular Tuesday ride for the stronger riders that covers greater distance and at a higher pace than normal club rides. A number of us choose to take part in time trials, sportives and long distance rides (100+ miles). We also hold regular track days at the velodrome.
- Do you ride mountain bikes? Too right; we often have a mountain bike group riding locally on the regular Thursday night club ride but please check before hand. We often ride Woodbury and Holden and make trips further afield to Dartmooor, Exmoor,The Quantocks and the Welsh trail centres.
